Annette Cain - Full Interview

Annetta Cain, second grade teacher at Spring Creek Elementary

If a parent asked how to keep a kid ready for school during the summer, what would be your number one piece of advice? Reading during the summer is the best way to have your child ready for the next year.  I sign my four kids up with the Edmond Library to take part in their summer reading program.  It provides little incentives along the way to read, and the children have a chance at winning some pretty big prizes at the end of the summer if their names are drawn. Two years ago, one of my kids won four tickets to White Water and last year my daughter won two tickets for paintballing.  The summer reading program is an awesome way to encourage children to read during the summer and reading is everything in school.

What kind of activities are especially helpful for getting a child ready to go back to school? Starting to get back into a routine at least two weeks before school starts.  I make sure they are getting at least eight hours of sleep and that they have a consistent bedtime.  Giving children stable routines that they can depend on is essential.

How do you think parents could get a kid excited about going back to school? Communicating in a positive way with your children is critical.  Talk about the new and exciting things this school year will bring. Contact some friends from school and try to get together before school starts. Or have a back to school bash (sleep over, ice cream party, swim party, etc.)!

In the past, what do you think children are most fearful of when returning to school? Most of children's fears of returning to school are connected to their new teacher.  Will she/he be nice, grumpy, loving, mean, understanding, or a drill sergeant?  Most schools have websites that have a biography of their teachers.  Let your child read about the teachers in their grade level, see their photos, etc.

What do you look forward to when going back to school? I can't wait to meet my students!  Each child in my class is like a puzzle to me, and I love trying to figure them out!
